A Gantt chart is a grid that shows the stages of a job as horizontal bars across a timeline: each bar tells you when an activity starts and when it finishes. To build one you only need three things you already have in your estimate: the stages of the work, how long each one takes and what order they go in (which stage waits on which). This guide walks through it step by step with a real kitchen remodel example.
What a Gantt chart is good for on a jobsite
You see the whole job at a glance
You know which tasks run in parallel, which ones overlap and how long the job really takes. That is what lets you commit to a completion date you can actually hit.
You catch delays while they are small
Comparing planned against actual shows a slip the week it happens instead of on the last day. You get to re-sequence instead of improvise.
Your subs know when they are up
Every stage has an owner and a date. The plumber knows the day he goes in, the tile setter knows when he starts, and nobody loses a day waiting on another trade.
You back up every progress billing
Percent complete lets you bill by completed stage and show the client, with something to point at, why the draw is due.
How to build the Gantt chart step by step
The schedule comes straight out of your estimate. Four steps:
List the stages from the estimate
Every line item in your estimate (demolition, rough-in, tile, cabinets) becomes a row on the Gantt chart.
Estimate how long each stage takes
In real working days, counting how many people you actually have on that task.
Set the dependencies
Mark which stage cannot start before another: you do not set tile on a wall that is not closed up.
Assign owners and track actual progress
Put a name on each stage and keep a row to record actual percent complete against the plan.

Reference durations for a standard kitchen with a small crew. They move with the size of the job, how many people you have on site and material lead times.
Plan vs actual: how to measure progress
A Gantt chart is not something you build once and file away. It lives with the job. The idea is to keep two lines side by side on every stage:
The plan
The dates you set at the start for each stage. That is your opening commitment and the basis for the completion date you gave the client.
The actual
What really happened: when each stage actually started and finished. You fill it in as the job moves, not at the end.
Percent complete
How much of each stage is done (tile at 60%, say). Roll the stages up and you have the progress of the whole job, which is what you bill and report on.
